business:
i run my own business specialising in designing and making bespoke soft furnishings. about twelve years ago i began concentrating on the more practical aspect of my career,making curtains covers blinds and cushions for private customers. this took off to such an extent that it has rather taken over from the more creative side of my work. in recent years i have tried to redress that and most of the work on this site is the result of more recent efforts! i now want to attempt to balance the two hence the website!
about work:
I have always been interested in trying to capture movement in my work, whether that be
in the bright colour and flashing lights of the fairground; swimmers in water; motor racing;
or the most popular and recurrent theme of dance in it’s different forms. In earlier years I
focussed much on ballet, both classical and modern, working a lot in pastels and
subdued colour and also using fabrics and embroidery. This most recent work is
on a much larger scale than I have ever worked before. It is also much freer, brighter
and bolder. I have based them on dances from musicals, west side story in particular.
Working on a large scale has given me a greater sense of freedom and I have really
enjoyed being able to be more expressive in my drawing technique.
the positive thing about having blocks of time away from drawing painting and more experimental work, is that each time i return to it i come with a slightly different perspective and hopfully new ideas. usually the longer the time away, the more different the style and medium when i do return to it!
